Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of the paper is to reveal the role of Japanese onomatopoeia in verbal communication in socio-linguistic way. To accomplish this purpose, we have conducted a web-based nationwide scale research about the frequencies of onomatopoeia use in each area, the intended listeners and events to deliver. As the results, they do not have any difference between the subjective frequencies of onomatopoeia use among areas, but there is still a strong belief about the area bias, probably given from mass-media. Moreover, onomatopoeia tend to be used to familiar people than socially elder people, and it is good at explaining events with visual and tactile features.
