Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is important for cerebrovascular disease patients to handle brakes and footrests of the manual wheelchair appropriately, in order to avoid falling down from it. Sensors are implemented to detect the timing of handling brakes and footrests. Another set of sensors on the seat is set to detect the wheelchair user sitting down or getting up. Lights are emitted from display devices on top of brake levers and in the corner of footrests boards, so as to prompt the user to handle brakes and footrests. Voice messages are also given as prompt, and it is used to call for attention when brakes and footrests are misused. In this paper, new vibrotactile devices on wrists and ankles are proposed to encourage patients with dementia to use the wheelchair properly. They may be induced to handle them appropriately step by step by the vibrotactile stimulation, having difficulty in recognizing the structure of wheelchairs.
