Measurements of UHF Band Building Penetration and Transmission Losses

Abstract(in English) For white space utilization promotion, a short range path loss model to estimated the secondary user's area is required. Since the transmitting and receiving antenna heights are assumed as several meters in residential areas for secondary use, the buildings loss is a major factor to estimate to the secondary user's communication range and the interference to the primary user. Thus this paper reports the measurement results of transmission and penetration losses of buildings in the UHF band. In the measurements, two different type buildings of light-gauge steel and wood were performed to compare the building materials. Both the penetration and transmission losses of a wooden house were smaller than that of a light-gauge steel house, and the losses is could be estimated by additional loss with free space loss. Since the transmission loss of the light-gauge steel house was huge, diffraction loss is more important to estimate the communication/interference areas. From these results, the building material is important to estimate the communication/interference areas for secondary user.
