On Log-Aesthetic Curves

Abstract(in English) Although freeform curves, such as Bezier or B-spline curves, are widely used, controlling the curvature variation of the curves is not easy. In highly aesthetic shape design, such as the exterior or automobiles, it is important to use highly aesthetic curves of monotone curvature. Harada et al. analyzed many aesthetic curves in artificial and the natural objects and found that the logarithmic curvature graphs of these curves can be approximated by straight lines. In this report, we introduce our work on log-aesthetic planar and space curves, such as clarifying the overall shapes and the characteristics, a method of interactive control, and the approximation of log-aesthetic planar curves by rational cubic Bezier curves.
