Abstract(in English) In this paper, current status of mechanical countermeasures for vigilance decrement in railway field is introduced, for example; EB system and ATS system with alarms for maintaining drivers vigilance, first. After that, author introduces discusses the limitation of mechanical countermeasures for vigilance decrement by sleepiness and necessity of management of sleepiness by the organization. Furthermore, some concrete activities in JR-West for management of sleepiness are introduced.
