Splice Loss Measurement Using End-reflection Assisted Brillouin Analysis

Abstract(in English) In deployed FTTH networks, bending insensitive fibres (BIFs) standardized by ITU-T G 657 have been employed to optimise optical fibre wiring, usually in drop and/or premises applications. The BIFs are often connected to installed standard single mode fibres (SSMF) standardized by G.652 and used in branched fibres in passive optical networks (PON). The MFD of the BIF does not match that of SSMF. However, unidirectional OTDR provides an inaccurate trace for the splice loss between mode field diameter (MFD) mismatched fibres. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately evaluate the true splice loss beyond the splitter from a central office. In such cases, bidirectional OTDR is recommended but it is not a practical approach for operators. In this paper, we introduce a bidirectional measurement scheme to the proposed end-reflection assisted Brillouin analysis, and thus demonstrate true splice loss monitoring in individual branched fibres beyond the splitter with centralized measurement.
