Study on Snowblower Support Application utilizing Android Terminals

Abstract(in English) In an area of high snowfall such as Niigata prefecture, Japan, snow removal is an indispensable activity for preventing traffic accidents. However, snowblowers are sometimes damaged by obstacles (e.g., manholes) and roadsides (e.g., guardrails, curb stones) hidden by snow, and the snow removal is delayed due to lack of cooperation between operators. These problems markedly decreases efficiency of the snow removals. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a new snowblower support system utilizing an Android terminal as a car navigation system. The Android terminal is equipped with a large-scale touch panel and various sensors (e.g., GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) that can be used for detecting its location/position. The proposed system notifies operators of road conditions and locations of road equipment by using VR/AR technologies, and supports operators by exchanging their task-history between them through communication function of the Android terminal. In order to clarify practicality of the proposed system, it has been implemented as an application of the Android terminal and the experimental evaluation has been performed in Nagaoka-city, Niigata-prefecture, Japan.
