Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Humans can grasp a gist of a visual scene very briefly without processing the details of each element within the visual sence. For example, we can estimate the summary statistics (e.g., average) of various features (e.g., size or position) of multiple visual objects quickly and accurately (perceptual averaging). In 3D visual space, even when an object size is constant, the retinal size of the object varies depending on a viewing distance (i.e., depth). However, it is unclear which the retinal coordinates or external coordinates is dominantly used in the perceptual averaging of size. In the present study, we investigated how the retinal size and physical size contribute to the perceptual averaging of size. In the experiment, observers estimated the average size of objects presented at variable depth in a 3D virtual reality environment. The results showed that the depths of the objects affected the estimates of the average size. Furthermore, the estimates of the average size correlated more strongly with the physical sizes of objects than with the retinal sizes. These results suggested that the perceptual averaging of size involves the external coordinates in which the retinal size of objects was transformed into the physical size of the objects through the depth processing.
