Abstract(in English) | Currently, for further advancement of high performance computers (HPCs), optical interconnects are anticipated as a key technology to realize high speed and density data exchange with low-power consumption. In particular, in order to realize board-level optical interconnects, optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs) integrated with multimode polymer optical waveguides are drawing much attention. However, the connection losses between polymer optical waveguides and multimode fibers (MMFs) that are widely adopted for off-board interconnects could be a problem. In this paper, we focus on the connection loss between multimode waveguides (and fibers) having different channel structures. We both experimentally and theoretically confirm that step-index (SI) square-core waveguides with smaller core (~35 μm), which is one of the technical trends in high-density optical wirings, decrease the connection loss with 50-μmφ graded-index (GI) MMFs. On the other hand, waveguides with GI cores show superior connection characteristics to the waveguides with SI square cores and the connection loss is almost independent of the core size of GI waveguides. |
