Abstract(in English) A fundamental scheme is utilized to reformulate the full-vectorial beam-propagation method (BPM). We first introduce the fundamental scheme into the Fresnel equations which are discretized using the Crank-Nicolson method (FCN-BPM). The present FCN-BPM has the advantage that the total number of arithmetic operators is extremely reduced when compared with the conventional CN scheme. As a result, the computation time in the FCN-BPM is reduced to about 85%, while maintaining identical accuracy. Next, we apply the fundamental scheme to the alternating-direction implicit BPM (FADI-BPM). The choice of the refractive index at each propagation step is discussed, paying attention to the commutativity of the coefficient matrices. The commutative expression is automatically derived in the FADI scheme, so that the present BPM keeps the calculation accuracy even for a z-varying waveguide. Numerical results reveal that the computation time is reduced to about 74%. Finally, we propose the power conserving algorithm with high computational efficiency, applying the fundamental scheme to the Fresnel equations respectively based on the electric and magnetic fields.
