Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) is one of the most famous endangered birds in Japan. This species was distributed widely in East Asian countries, and became extinct in most distribution area by hunting and deterioration of habitat environment. Key factors for conservation of crested ibis are not only in breeding technique but also in habitat management. We have restored satoyama ecosystems in Sado Island for reintroduction of the species since 2002. Niigata University and more than 20 of NPO groups have restored abandoned rice paddy fields to wetland biotopes. To keep satoyama in good condition, we should take into account that the ecosystem is always unstable and it has potentials to make vegetation successions from wetland to forest. It always needs maintenance by artificial disturbances (i.e. cultivating, coppicing and glass cutting). Environment of satoyama is, therefore, very sensitive to social and / or economic conditions. More than 40 years has passed since we lost the economic merits to utilize satoyama. We need to reconstruct the new principle and to find new economic merits to keep it. |
