A Study on Image Transfer Period for Disaster Monitoring System Using Wireless Network

Abstract(in English) When a large-scale disaster such as an earthquake or tsunami occurs, a disaster monitoring system which gathers images captured in the disaster area using wireless network composed by widely distributed wireless nodes equipped a camera can be useful. If the image sending period is set to a same constant value at each image sending node (fixed period setting scheme), it is difficult to select an image sending period which achieves as high quality real-time image transmission as possible without causing congestion on the wireless channel. In this paper, we propose an adapted period setting scheme which dynamically controls image sending period based on image data delivery ratio. We evaluate our scheme through comparative experiments with the fixed period setting scheme under wireless single-hop network using 20 image sender nodes. Proposed scheme adaptively selects image sending period that is close to the optimal one, which was obtained through the fixed period setting scheme and can significantly improves the image data delivery ratio, throughput as well as delivery delay.
