Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The current Internet, relying on end-to-end packet exchanges based on TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), could not work efficiently in bad conditions such as extremely long propagation delays, frequent packet losses, or intermittently disconnected communication links. The DTN (Delay Tolerant Networking), whose origin includes the IPN (InterPlanetary Internet), is a set of technologies and a framework that have been aiming to realize an efficient end-to-end information transmission even in such challenged environments with diverse new meanings of "D" (Disruption, Disconnection, Disaster, etc.), expanding the possible design space for information exchange systems, and thus involving various R&Ds driven by both practical needs and theoretical interests. Essential common functions in several aspects of DTN, such as challenged networking and optimistic networking, are Store (Wait)-and-Forward and Store Carry-and-Forward of information in response to temporal and spatial discontinuities, respectively, and associated information coding schemes. Those functions have become recognized as a useful means in normal network environments as well. In recent years, on one hand, DTN technologies have been refined to adapt to a particular application for practical use, and on the other hand, the DTN-based framework is expected to evolve as a fundamental architecture of information exchanges to support a resource efficient Internet integrating extremely diverse wireless and wired networks. In this talk, we briefly review past and present DTN research activities and applications, and discuss future DTN research in the context of recent technology prospects for Future Internet directions.
