Abstract(in English) | Some studies, including minimization of drive-tests (MDT) in 3GPP, have considered gathering coverage information such as poor radio signal strength, with the position from mobile terminals, which is valuable for cellular operators in determining coverage problems and devising optimum countermeasures. In such studies, position information related to coverage information is of utmost importance. However, GPS does not work indoors; therefore, it is difficult to determine a building where there is a coverage hole since position error increases when using another localization technique, such as Cell-ID positioning is used. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire information that indicates the building. We first investigated how signal strength behaves when the terminal moves out in several situations and found that the signal strength was rapidly enhanced as the terminal approached the entrance of a building. Then, in this paper, we propose re-GPS, which estimates that the mobile terminal moves out from an indoor space after the GPS positioning failed and starts GPS positioning again. The re-GPS leverages the transition of cellular signal strength to estimate the move-out. Using the re-GPS, repositioned information is expected to be concentrated close to the building, which implies that the building can have a coverage hole. For the evaluation of the re-GPS, we implemented the re-GPS on a smartphone with the Android operating system. Through field trials using the smartphone, we found that it did help acquire a more exact position with coverage information while the re-GPS could not always detect the move-out. |
