Performance Evaluation of 802.15.4k DSSS System in the Presence of 802.15.4g Co-Channel Interference

Abstract(in English) This paper investigates the impact of co-channel interference (CCI) from a smart utility network transmitter with 200 kHz bandwidth based on IEEE 802.15.4g standard specifications to a wireless sensor network system with 1 MHz bandwidth based on Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) PHY of the IEEE 802.15.4k standard. The first contribution of this paper is comparing the BER performance degradation in 802.15.4k due to interference coming from 5 subchannels of 802.15.4g. Our evaluation at a desired to undesired signal (D/U) ratio of 5dB indicates that if the center frequency of the 802.15.4g matches the 802.15.4k center frequency, required E_b/N_0 to reach target BER performance is about 0.4 dB higher than the other cases, where frequency offset between 802.15.4g center frequency and 802.15.4k center frequency is ±400KHz. The second contribution is 802.15.4k BER performance at different D/U ratios. Results clarify that at D/U ratios more than 6.8 dB, 802.15.4k can operate successfully at an E_b/N_0 of 5dB without the need of spreading. Next, we investigate the use of spreading in 802.15.4k against CCI. A spreading factor of 4096 protect 802.15.4 link up to D/U ratios of -65dB. Last contribution of the paper is providing the area where 802.15.4g can interfere to a 802.15.4k system which uses directional antennas at the receiver and spreading. Results show that with a spreading factor of 4096, 802.15.4k can reduce the area that 802.15.4g effectively interfere by 10^7 times compared with no spreading.
