Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 2011, involving tsunami and the meltdown of nuclear power plant has caused profound impacts on Japanese society. To understand the complex impacts of the earthquake on emotional states, we analyzed over 170 million Japanese Twitter messages (tweets) for a week after March 11 2011 provided by Twitter Japan K.K. for "The Great East Japan Earthquake Big Data Workshop: Project 311". We extracted natural-disaster-related messages and nuclear-hazard-related messages from the tweets and counted the positive and negative emotion adjectives per one message. The frequency of negative words in natural-disaster-related tweets oscillated periodically in one-day cycle, whereas the frequency in nuclear-hazard-related tweets did not. Our result implies that the affective reactions to the natural disaster and the nuclear hazard are different from each other.
