Facial Expression Differences among Empathic Facial Mimicry and Intentional Facial Mimicry

Abstract(in English) During a social interaction, we mirror each other's facial expressions automatically as well as intentionally. Such facial activity is referred to as facial mimicry or facial imitation. The present study aims at investigating the differences in facial expression sequences among empathic facial mimicry and intentional facial mimicry. We used methodologies of geometric morphometrics and a multi-way decomposition method PARAFAC in order to treat dynamic facial sequences. The facial motion sequences of eleven undergraduates were recorded using motion capture system while the participants viewed pictures of happiness, anger, and neutral facial expressions in two conditions (empathetic mimicry vs. intentional mimicry). We performed PARAFAC on the standardized facial landmark coordinates of the participants. One component of facial expression was found to be linked to the difference between empathic facial mimicry and intentional mimicry.
