Development Trend in ITS Wireless Communication Technology for Safety Driving Support

Abstract(in English) Intelligent Transport System (ITS) is expected to play an important role in the future road safety and smooth traffic flow. For safety driving, both Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Infrastructure to Vehicle (I2V) communications are regarded as an essential means to predict possible collision and automatically speed down or alert drivers, as well as to prevent vehicles from missing traffic lights or important road information. CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) scheme is suitable for the communications because vehicles can send its own packet autonomously without interfering with other vehicles. Also, CSMA/CA enables I2V communication to coexist with V2V communications in a single RF channel. Thus, a V2V/I2V integrated communication system has been standardized in Japan. High communication reliability is required for the safety driving support system. In this talk, the ITS broadcast communication technologies are surveyed focusing the development trend and current status. Then, a theoretical analysis framework that could be used to analyze broadcast packet delivery rate of distributed inter-vehicle communication system with CSMA/CA is presented considering wireless environment with fading, shadowing and hidden terminal effect. Remaining issues in the system are also referred.
