A study on soft decision demodulation for block transmission systems

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we investigate a block transmission system which transmits multiplexed symbols using multi-dimensional signal space when the receiver makes use of the soft decision value of the symbol divider, the symbol demapper and the decoder for the forward error correction in comparison with the hard decision value. We assume that the transmitter adopts the binary linear block error correction, such as the convolutional code, and the conventional QAM for the symbol mapping and transmits the multiplexed symbols using the multi-dimensional signal space. The receiver with the multi-dimensional signal space observes the multiplexed transmitted symbols. It is necessary to input divided codeword elements to the decoder after dividing the multiplexed transmitted symbols and demapping the symbols. We evaluate message bit error performances at the output of the decoder by comparing the hard decision value with soft decision value after the symbol and codeword dividers. We adopt symbol dividers based on the maximum likelihood criterion, the MMSE filter and the logarithmic ratio of the a posteriori probabilities of the codeword. By computer simulations, we show that the method of the logarithmic ratio outperforms that of the MMSE filter.
