Schoo lenvironment and mobile phone dependence among high school students

Abstract(in English) Based on data obtained from a sample of 500 high school teachers, a sample of high schools were first divided into three groups on the basis of the frequency of delinquent behavior at school, and questionnaire data from 1, 500 high school students were subsequently analyzed. In this questionnaire, students answered question items related to a tendency to dependence on the mobile phone, the importance of the mobile phone on practical and psychological aspects, and the degree of being bullied, and mean scores of these question items were compared with one another. Results indicated that students attending high-delinquency schools were more likely to be dependent on the mobile phone and feel anxiety over the use of the mobile phone than those at lower-delinquency schools. It was also found that both on the practical and psychological aspects, students at high-delinquency schools put more importance on the mobile phone and were more vulnerable to bullying. Furthermore, results of structural equation modeling (SEM) suggested possibilities that one's tendency to dependence on the mobile phone relates to the degree of being bullied, and the degree of being bullied by his/her schoolmates affects the way one feels anxiety over the use of the mobile phone.
