Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is widely known that a large amount of information is required for complex texture regions when conventional image coding standards such as JPEG are utilized. In this paper, we propose a new texture synthesis image coding, in which complex texture regions are detected by image segmentation in the encoder and only their small partial regions are encoded and transmitted, and texture synthesis technique is applied at the decoder to reproduce full texture regions. Our algorithm newly introduces a saliency map to select texture regions to be encoded and an effective texture synthesis method based on Poisson blending technique in the decoder. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce a large amount of bits without visual degradation in comparison with the conventional JPEG.
