Abstract(in English) An absorption-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) waveguide sensor is numerically investigated for detecting a change in the imaginary part of a refractive index using the alternating-direction implicit beam-propagation method with a fundamental scheme (FADI-BPM). We first apply the fundamental scheme to the ADI-BPM. Numerical results reveal that the computation time and memory requirements are reduced to about 80%. Using the FADI-BPM, we analyze the SPR waveguide sensor consisting of a semi-embedded core which supports only a single mode. Measuring the minimum output power, we detect a change in the imaginary part of the refractive index. Next, we modify the waveguide structure for improving its performance. An improved sensitivity is obtained using the waveguide structure with an embedded core being wide enough to support higher-order modes. Finally, we also investigate the detection of a change in the real part. It is seen that the maximal absorption wavelength shifts towards the long wavelength by 5 nm, when the real part is increased from 1.330 to 1.334
