In-Network Video Traffic Detection using Regular Expressions

Abstract(in English) In recent years, the forms of communication have been diversified and the amount of traffic has increased significantly in the Internet. Especially, the video traffic in the Internet has increased so significantly as to account for 40% of the entire traffic. In order to respond to such changes in the communication, there is a growing need for In-Network Processing for performing data processing such as packet caching within the network. At the same time, we observe that the advance of network processors, FPGAs and ASICs allows us to process packets at high wire rate. We propose a technique that detects and separates video traffic flows in real time by In-Network Processing. This technique is considered one of the most important basic primitive functions for various In-Network Processing applications such as caching and delay tolerant network delivery. Our proposed method performs DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) by regular expression matching on packet payloads (L7) and recognizes the flow tuples (such as IP addresses and ports), then classifies such video traffic by the flow tuples from then on. In addition, we implement and evaluate identification and separation of video traffic using Click modular router Our evaluation by replaying the real traffic data shows that our prototype can detect and separate video traffic flow at 2.8Gbps wire-rate in real time with only extra 12% CPU load compared to the vanilla Click forwarding.
