Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To make large-capacity lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery backup power sources for telecommunications equipment, we have been investigating how to improve safety and lifetime. In the backup power supply of a communication system, many large-capacity Li-ion cells are maintained in a standby state which is almost fully charged by constant voltage charging, so a long lifetime and a high level of safety must be ensured. In this examination, the 200-Ah cell was fabricated with an electrolyte composed of phosphazene flame retardant added to a base electrolyte and with a cathode material in which part of the elemental manganese was replaced with magnesium. Life tests were performed. The results showed a lifetime of 10 years or more can be expected with float charging. Safety tests were performed under the assumption of telecommunications backup use. The results showed no explosion or ignition.
