Abstract(in English) | This paper reports a fundamental research of quantitative assessment for brush handwriting ability. We propose an off-line evaluation method for writer' s ability using one typical character written on Japanese writing papers. The character contains eight basic techniques of standard brush handwriting style. We investigated the relationship between values of psychological appraisals by Thurstone' s pairwise comparison and distances in feature space. The following processes calculate the distance in feature space. First, gradient of gray-scale features are extracted from digitized image of brush handwriting using a flatbed scanner. Next, principal component analysis was applied to reduce the dimensionality of feature space. Regularized Mahalanobis distance between an input feature vector and a reference vector extracted from a standard character. Linear regression, of which the Mahalanobis distance between feature vectors and the psychological appraisals were used as explaining and objective variable, respectively, was applied. The evaluation value for unknown input feature vector was estimated by substituting the Mahalanobis distance between the vector and the reference to the regression equation. We prepared an evaluation brush handwriting dataset that consists of 30 (15×2)evaluation images and 200 training images for benchmark experiments. Promising results for quantitative evaluation of brush handwriting ability by the proposed method is obtained. |
