Removal of Show-through for One-side Scanned Document by Discrete Optimization

Abstract(in English) This paper presents a show-through removal method based on discrete optimization. Images of duplex printed documents may be degraded by show-through, which may affect the character recognition ratio of a document. Show-through is a common phenomenon that texts or figures on one side appears on the other side. There are two ways to remove show-through components from the images: show-through removal from both-side images and that from a one-side image. The method using both-side images requires 1)both side images and 2)precise alignment of images, which is a difficult problem to solve automatically. The method using a one-side image can be designed as a discrete optimization problem estimating both-side intensities for each pixel. However, the solution requires huge computational cost, because the number of labels is big (256×256). In this report, we formalize this problem as another discrete-optimization problem to estimate pixel's attributes (foreground, show-through, or background). Clearly, this method uses three labels, and thus, computationally inexpensive. Through experiment using many show-through images, we confirmed that our method removes show-through components.
