Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We propose a portable system to provide blind persons with restaurant menu information (food/drink and its price). Restaurant menus are classified into two types, i.e. menus in which characters don't overlap with pictures and those in which characters overlap with pictures. We developed procedures for each menu. For example. for menus with characters on pictures, the system detects currency symbols by using SVM from an obtained image. It separates characters and pictures by extracting colors of currency symbols. Then, it filters out non character string regions and applies OCR to obtained character string regions. Finally, it presents the recognized text to blind persons as voice. Experimental results for 8 images (5 restaurants) shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.
