Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The communication technologies to create realistic feeling as if they are in a remote place by duplicating multi-sensory information have been studied over a long period. To realize multi-sensory communications, there are three stages: capturing multi-sensory information in the place, sending the information, and generating stimuli corresponding to each sensory organ as measured. However multi-sensory communications have a lot of difficulties in each stage previously-mentioned because of complexity and enormousness of sensory information. On the other hand, recent studies in cognitive science are suggesting that cross-modal interactions have an important role in our perception. In cross-modal interactions, the perception of a sensation through one sense is changed by other stimuli that are simultaneously received through other senses. By utilizing the cross-modal interactions for communication technologies, multi-sensory communications will realized with minimum sensory information capturing and narrow-band networks. In this paper, I introduce some examples of perception-based interfaces which present ultra-realistic experience with limited sensory information by using cross-modal interactions.
