Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The terahertz (THz) region has attracted much attention for its potential of application. For details, THz region is expected for commercial applications including detection of hazardous materials and banned drugs, large-capacity wireless communications, medical diagnoses and so on. In this instance, liquid crystals (LCs)are expected to achieve the requirement for controlling technology of polarization, phase and transmittance of THz waves for these applications. LCs are widely used in the visible region possessing optical anisotropy and electric-field response. However, THz LC devices haven't been used practically because of the low response speed and high driving voltage. In this study, we report that improvement of response speed by using an etalon structure with a thin LC layer and low voltage driving of a THz λ/4 plate by adapting a thin-film conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS as a transparent electrode.
