Abstract(in English) | Thin films of 3d ferromagnetic transition metals (Fe, Co, and Ni)and teir alloys are prepared on MgO, SrTiO_3,and GaAs single-crystal substrates of (100)orientation. The growth behavior and the structure are investigated by RHEED, XRD, and HR-TEM. Fe, Fe_<65>Co_<35>,Fe_<50>Co_<50>,and Fe_<80>Ni_<20> (at %)films with bcc structure are formed on all the substrates. Co films epitaxially grown on MgO substrates at temperatures higher than 300℃ consist of hcp(1120)bi-crystals, whereas a Co epitaxial film deposited at 100℃ involves an fcc(100)crystal in addition to hcp(1120)crystals. Co_<80>Ni_<20> films grown on MgO substrates consist of a mixture of hcp(1120)and fcc(100)crystals regardless of growth temperature. Ni and Ni_<80>Fe_<20> films grown on MgO substrates include not only fcc(100)but also hcp(1120)crystals which are metastable and stabilized through hetero-epitaxial growth. As the film thickness increases, the Ni and the Ni_<80>Fe_<20> crystals of hcp(1120)orientation tend to transform into more stable fee crystals of (110)orientation by atomic displacement parallel to the hcp(0001)close-packed plane. Co, Co_<80>Ni_<20>,Ni, and Ni_<80>Fe_<20> films with fee strueture grow epitaxially on SrTiO_3 substrates. Metastable bcc crystals nucleate i early stages of Co, Ni, and Ni_<80>Fe_<20> film growth on GaAs substrates. With increasing the thickness, the metastable bcc structure starts to transform into fee strueture through atomic displacement parallel to the bcc{110} close-packed planes. XRD indicates that the strains in films epitaxially grown on MgO substrates are very small though the lattice mismatches are as large as 3-17%. Cross-sectional HR-TEM shows that a lot of misfit dislocations are introduced in the films around film/substrate interfaces to reduce the mismatches. |
