Abstract(in English) Abstract A car navigation system is a tool that can be helpful for supporting safe and comfortable driving. The tasks in a car navigation system are to provide map display, positioning, route planning, route guidance, and So on. To improve the dependability of these tasks, it is essential for car navigation systems to use the latest road map database. However, such tasks often use a pre-installed old road map database without any updates, since there is no easy way to update the database. Such unintentional accesses would cause misleading behaviors of these tasks in car navigation systems; e.g., a map-matching method locates a vehicle on a wrong road, the route planning selects removed roads, and so on. In this paper, we propose a broadcast-based notification protocol to inform car navigation systems about the existence of updates in road map databases, in order to reduce the misleading influence of updated roads. The results of evaluations conducted on the efficacy of our proposed protocol indicate that it achieves all notifications for updated roads in a Tokyo area by broadcasting invalidation reports of 13K bytes, while the update size of a used data is 35M bytes.
