Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Distributed Source Coding (DSC)concerns encoding of correlated information sources, without letting the sources communicate with each other to exploit the inter source redundancy. The DSC theorem states that the optimal rate achieved when performing joint encoding and decoding can theoretically be reached by doing separate encoding and joint decoding. In this paper, after describing the DSC theorem, we provide its application to media processing. In addition, we present a survey of recent trends and problems of DSC applications. As one of the applications to media processing, Distributed Video Coding (DVC)is attracting attention as a new paradigm for video compression. While the conventional video coding such as H.264/AVC reduces inter-frame redundancy at the encoder, DVC reduces inter-frame redundancy at the decoder by using channel coding. Other applications beyond video coding are also introduced. One is compression of encrypted images. The novelty is the reversing order of compression and encryption. We also give an explanation of image/audio authentication based on the DSC theorem.
