Lightning surge voltage characteristics between the ports of telecommunications equipment for FTTH service

Abstract(in English) In recent years, many faults of telecommunications equipment which have multiple telecommunication ports such as Home Gate Way (HGW) due to lightning surges are reported. As the results of replacing external metal cables to optical fiber cables, we assumed that the number of faults due to lightning surges will be significantly reduced because the induction path of the lightning surge will be only ac mains ports of the equipment. However, the numbers of faults are not reduced perceptibly. One of the reasons of that is considered that there are two different phase ac power lines in Japanese houses and surge voltages can be occurred between ports of the HGW to which connected other equipment e.g. PC or FAX supplied ac powers by the different phase power line from that of the HGW. As the result of current study, mechanisms of the faults due to surge voltages at telecommunication ports had been shown but the voltage characteristics between the ports of the HGW are not clarified. In this study, we report the measured surge voltage characteristics between the ac power, telecommunication and LAN ports of the HGW connected with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment that installed in a single phase power line, and the risk of faults due to lightning surges can be increased.
