Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Server consolidation techniques have widely been studied to reduce energy consumption in datacenters. One solution is to periodically consolidate servers, such as VMware DRS/DPM, however, due to high calculation cost, such systems cannot keep up with the trend of sharp fluctuation in VMs' resource utilization. Furthermore, the high calculation cost causes scalability issue. In this research, we propose a new server consolidation mechanism that uses the Best-Fit algorithm enhanced with Dynamic Threshold management and VMs' swap technique. The best-fit algorithm is useful to reduce the calculation cost, and our mechanism contributes to reduce more energy consumption than the best-fit algorithm in some cases, though number of VM migrations have increased. Finally, we discuss the tradeoff among energy consumption, calculation cost, and number of VM migrations.
