Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Patients with cardiac pacemakers are restricted to the usage of electronic devices in order to prevent possible malfunction of the pacemakers due to electromagnetic interferences emitted from these devices. There have been a number of previous studies of the effects of various kinds of electronic devices on cardiac pacemakers. However, to our best knowledge, there have been no studies on the gaming machines used in pachinko parlors in Japan. Thus, this study focused on pachinko slot-machines among various types of the gaming machines found in the parlors. We investigated the effects of electromagnetic noises on the pacemakers of game players when three slot-machines were active. Here, instead of a cardiac patient, we used a phantom model based on the Irnich model (loop area:2.25x10^-2m^2), filled with a 0.18 wt% NaC1 solution. We then measured the induced voltage in the pacemaker lead under the various active status of the three machines. Even under the worst conditions (all machines fully active), the induced noise voltage was still very low (>100dB) compared to the ventricular sensing voltage. Therefore, it is suggested that the alternating current magnetic fields emitted from gaming machines does not seem to cause any significant malfunction in the pacemakers of game players.
