Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have developed a Brain-Machine Interface based Occupational Therapy Assist Suit (BOTAS), which estimated user's intention from patterns of EEG signals to drive registered movements. However, these methods needed several-seconds delay to initiate the motion, and number of the motion patterns was limited. In this study, we developed a new method to estimate the user's arm position utilizing surface EMG signals from arm muscles to control the assist suit, in which the user's intention was reflected. Our newly developed method estimates flexion/extension angles of a shoulder and an elbow at a mechanical equilibrium point of a musculo-skeletal system from EMG signals. We made a mathematical model of a musculo-skeletal system of an upper arm and derived a formula to calculate the angles from the user's EMG signals with the model. EMG signals were recorded from 8 muscles of an upper arm. The method succeeded in estimating the joint angles of the subjects (correlation between measured and estimated angles in three subjects: 0.76±0.12 for shoulder and 0.77±0.079 for elbow). Combining this method and our BMI method will make hybrid control with EMG and EEG possible.
