Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has been reported that reverse replay and temporally-structured replay of ensemble spiking patterns occur during both awake behavior and sleep in the hippocampal CA1 region. In this paper, we explore optimal neural implementations for executing such memory replays, and interpret a computational role of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). First, we formulate a hetero-associative memory network model executing normal, reverse and temporally-structured replays as a phase reduction model consisting of a STDP window function and a phase response curve (PRC). Next, we analytically examine the network behavior in those replays, and derive the mutual information for measuring those replay qualities. By maximizing the mutual information, we search a set of optimal STDP window functions under the constraint of PRCs of the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons recorded in vitro. The theoretically derived set of window functions qualitatively conforms to various types of STDP reported previously.
