Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) waveguide sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is analyzed using the imaginary-distance beam-propagation method and the non-uniform mesh finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. First, we evaluate the characteristics of surface plasmon polariton modes which are excited along the metal/analyte and metal/core surfaces. Then, we estimate the length of the metal in which a maximum interference is achieved at the end of the sensing section. Next, the performance of the SPR sensor is evaluated using the FDTD. The effectiveness of the non-uniform mesh FDTD is demonstrated, in which the computation time and required memory are reduced to ⋍ 20% of those of the uniform mesh FDTD. A sensitivity of 10^<-6> is expected around a specific refractive index (1.331~1.335) for the sensor with an analyte thickness of 1μm and a metal length of 10.19μm. It is also shown that a sensitivity of 10^<-5> is obtained for an analyte index ranging from 1.330 to 1.340.
