Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies on Japanese language comprehension have shown that grammatical aspect is processed by interacting with lexical aspect. However, it is not clear whether agreement violations of grammatical aspect by itself can influence sentence processing. This study investigates how native speakers of Japanese process grammatical aspect by using event-related potentials (ERP). Our results show that the mismatch between adverb and grammatical aspect marker in Japanese elicits a left anterior negativity (LAN) effect. This indicates that LAN is not limited in Indo-European languages, but it reflects more general agreement violations of morphosyntactic. The lack of a N400 effect suggests that the processing of grammatical aspect in Japanese is not semantically driven.
