Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Several types of optical visualization techniques for evaluating the acoustic field are discussed: the schlieren technique, the Fresnel method, the photoelastic method and the sensitive tint visualization metod. We begin with a review of the physical mechanism of acousto-optic interaction used in visualization technique, and then discuss the experimental apparatus and the observed images. The ultrasonic standing waves visualized by luminol reaction are also explained. Video and still image visualizations of vibrating materials and traveling ultrasonic pulses are useful educational tools for studying wave behavior and properties.
