Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently we revealed that the mixed alkali metaphosphate glass with the composition of 25LiPO_3-25NaPO_3-25KPPO_3-25CsPO_3 (mol%) showed large birefringence when the glass was deformed under uniaxial tensile stress at an appropriate temperature. In this study, we evaluated the structure and the thermal expansion of the anisotropic mixed alkali metaphosphate glass fiber. Structural studies by polarized Raman spectroscopy revealed that the anisotropic glass fiber consisted mainly of long chains of PO_4 tetrahedra, and the axes of these chains had a strong preference for lying along the fiber axis direction and the out of chain, PO_2 units, were oriented to the perpendicular to the fiber axis direction. The anisotropic glass fiber showed huge thermal shrinkage behavior.
