Abstract(in English) | In the fly visual system, mutual recurrent connections among motion-sensitive neurons (Lobula Plate Tangential Cells (LPTCs)) on both hemispheres have been identified. The fly is an ideal model system to analyze the integration of visual information from both visual hemispheres. Here, to uncover a role for the mutual recurrent connection in the binocular integration, we construct a mathematical model of the LTPCs circuit consisting of formal neurons. Using the mutual information measure, we numerically quantify the encoding capacity of the LTPCs circuit model in response to the following two kinds of motion stimuli. One is the rotation stimulus in which each eye receives an equal motion input. The other is the translation stimulus in which each eye receives an opposite motion input. We compare sensitivities of the LTPCs circuit model to these two stimuli with or without the mutual connection. We show that the mutual connection enhances the sensitivity of the neurons to the rotation stimulus whereas the mutual connection suppresses that to the translation stimulus. These results suggest that the LTCPs circuit is sensitive to congruent binocular stimuli and filters out conflicting stimuli due to the mutual recurrent connection between both hemispheres. |
