A Proposal of Colorization Method for Monochrome Image by Color Transfer Based on Pattern Matching

Abstract(in English) In this report, in order to realize automatic and photorealistic colorization of a monochrome image, a new colorization method is proposed. In this method, firstly, a reference color image including the subjects similar to those of the monochrome image should be prepared beforehand. Then, the input monochrome image is colored by using the colors obtained by the local lightness pattern matching between the lightness adjusted monochrome image and the color image. In order to improve the processing speed, the images are reduced their sizes in the pattern matching process. And to mitigate the image quality degradation, the color modification based on the lightness ratio of the resized colored image and the original monochrome image is achieved. Finally, unnatural colorization results are modified by the cross bilateral filter and the lightness ratio-based color modification. In this study, the colorization experiments using various natural images are done, and the resultant images are evaluated by the paired comparison test. Through the test results, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed.
