Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study examined whether the gaze direction in depth affects the perception of facial expressions. Facial images displaying emotion of anger, happiness, fearful, or sadness at mild intensity were manipulated to appear gazing towards closer or farther target. Participants observed each of those facial images and judged whether it expressed any emotion or not. The results showed that participants were more likely to detect emotion in fearful and sad facial expressions when the faces appeared gazing towards farther than closer target. Perception of facial expressions may be enhanced when the distance cues in the gaze is congruent with the approach-avoidance tendency associated with the emotions expressed through the faces.
