Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Eating with others play important roles for human communication. However, relatively little is known how people combine conversation and eating behavior in table-talk situation. Here, we explore how table-talk communication is structured by the analyses of utterance and eating behaviors of participants. Conversations during meal among three women (3 cases) were videotaped, transcribed and analyzed in the aspects of their utterances , turn-taking and eating actions. We analyzed the opportunity for a hearer to have meals in conversation about a topic, especially from the standpoint of relationship with the behavior of another hearer. Results demonstrated that the hearer's eating behaviors occurred frequently around utterance paragraphs and immediately after a topic-shift. Furthermore, the hearer's eating behaviors also occurred when another hearer respond to utterance of the speaker. These results suggest that a hearer in table-talk tend to eat meals when another hearer exhibits her hearership to a speaker. These strategic eating behaviors of hearers might contribute to the natural continuation of table-talk communication which includes conversation and eating behaviors in a balanced manner.
