Abstract(in English) | Humans utilize multisensory information to conduct stable and efficient perception. Our perception often differs from physical inputs, since it can be altered by adapting to the integrated information. A fission illusion is one of the illusions induced by audio-visual integration in this process. In the present study, it is hypothesized that complexity of the visual stimuli affects the occurrence rate of the illusion, since this illusion occurs in the short temporal range by integration of visual and auditory information. The present study examined the effect of complexity on fission illusion by applyinf the visual pattern proposed by Garner and Clement (1963). The experimental results indicated that more complex visual patterns were difficult to induce a fission illusion. The effect of the patterns' complexity on the illusion differed along the stimulus onset asynchronies between the first visual stimulus and the second auditory stimulus. These results suggest that fission illusion could be induced by the fast integration of the first visual stimulus with the first beep until the presentation of the second beep. Thus, the audio-visual integration would be affected by the perceptual efficiency of the stimuli. |
