Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) People express themselves according to various situations and others they face by shifting different sides of self, and they are motivated to do so because they hope to build interpersonal relationships as adaptively as they can. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether expressed self would differ by personality of conversational partners and also if such difference would influence rapport (i.e., conversational satisfaction) and intimacy toward one's partner. In the experiment, undergraduates (male, female) were to engage in a 12-minute unstructured conversation with a same-sex partner and were instructed to socialize with one another. The combination of participants was manipulated with different level of extraversion (e.g., high, medium, low). As a result, the larger the difference was within pairs, the more intimate individuals felt toward their conversational partners. Also, individuals' change in self-expression was influenced by their partners' social skill such as expressiveness and self-control. The effect of shifting self-expression on adaptive interpersonal communication was discussed.
