Abstract(in English) In this paper, we investigate effect of retransmitted packet size preservation (RPSP) property on goodput for IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function), where RPSP means that sizes of all packets transferred over a wireless channel (referred to as transferred packets) with the same sequence-number at retransmissions are equal to the size of a packet generated at the original transmission (namely, generated packet). In a wireless communication environment, packet transfers suffer from bit-errors, where packet corruption probability depends on the packet size. Thus, longer packets will be lost repeatedly more times because of RPSP. In particular, the effect of RPSP clearly exists when the size distribution of generated packets has a considerable variation, resulting in the distribution of transferred packet sizes being markedly different from that of generated packet sizes. In addition, the packet corruption probability is larger under the assumption where packet sizes are independently distributed for each transmission. Goodput is a function of the packet size distribution and the packet corruption probability. However, the RPSP effect was explicitly not modeled for the traditional goodput analysis. Hence, we propose the performance model of approximate goodput reflecting the RPSP effect, and discuss the RPSP effect on the goodput from the numerical results based on actual IP traffic measurements.
