Characteristic analysis of packet loss probability for two types of traffic

Abstract(in English) It has been proposed that call admission control (CAC) based on equality of two types of traffic minimizes total call-blocking rate. However, if this CAC method is applied to packet switched network, it may cause more packet loss because packets have burst charateristics. Therefore, in order to apply the CAC to packet switched network, we need to analyze the characteristics of the CAC at a packet level. In this paper, as a basic study, we propose the burst characteristics for two types of traffic by MMPP/M/1/K model, and analyze the characteristics of packet loss probability with a given number of flows by using numerical calculation. As a result, the packet loss probability increases notably when the burst holding time is short. On the other hand, the packet loss probability decreases moderately when the burst holding time is short. Moreover, we also show that packet loss probability is affected by the number of flows and each bandwidth of them.
