Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) 3GPP(3^ Generation Partnership Project) is currently specifying LTE Release 11 targeting its finalization in September 2012. With the introduction of new advanced features, e.g., CoMP, additional carrier type, enhanced control channel (ePDCCH) etc., Release 11 would be able to provide higher system performance and more flexible deployments compared to LTE Release 10. On the other hand, unprecedented market trends were observed recently. High-spec handsets, in particular smartphones, are proliferating and mobile video image delivery/streaming and more new innovative applications are reaching more and more customers. In the coming decade, mobile data traffic is expected to grow at a pace that exceeds our past experiences. Thus, drastic and continuous improvement of system performance is necessary in the future. In this talk, taking into consideration the above trends, the target requirements towards 2020 are estimated. Then, technical solutions and candidate concepts to be considered for further LTE enhancements and future radio access are presented. Specifically, to enable efficient utilization of future higher frequency bands, the designs of the radio access network and the radio access technology are identified as important issues. In particular, a hierarchical radio access network where a macro node (wide area) exploits existing lower frequency band to support coverage and mobility while additional wider and higher frequency bands are utilized by lower power nodes (local area) to provide high speed data transmission is one potential future architecture, to which hybrid radio access is a potential technology that can be applied towards further enhancements of spectrum efficiency.
